Human-Powered Machines

When:

July 8th - 11th

Where:

Aprovecho Education Center

How Much: $400

Have you ever thought “I wish I could use something other than fossil fuels to grind my coffee, do my laundry, etc.?” Well, you can!

Many household devices can be converted to be run simply by human power. Participants in this workshop will learn a brief history of human-powered machines and the basic design principles needed to create one. Over the course of four days, workshop participants will collaborate on constructing an adaptable pedal-powered machine, which can be used to run a blender, a water pump, or an electricity generator. Participants will learn basic bike de-construction and metal-working skills, including welding. No prior experience with metal fabrication or bicycle maintenance is necessary.

A portion of all course fees will be donated to Maya Pedal, a Guatemalan non-profit which makes pedal-powered machines for rural workers in Guatemala.
